About me

I am a biologist specialised in genetics, physiology and cell biology. My scientific interests are in mitochondrial biology, metabolism and ageing. I did my PhD in studying mitochondrial diseases focusing in the skeletal muscle and late onset myopathies. Currently I am working with mitochondrial disease mechanisms associated with mitochondrial proteases and stress signalling in cardiomyopathy and myopathy. I am looking to establish my own research group to investigate mitochondrial metabolism, stress signalling and ferroptosis in mitochondrial diseases.

I draw and paint scientific images as well as science inspired art work. Also in my art I like to focus on the role of mitochondria in controlling the cellular metabolism and fitness. I am fascinated by these tiny organelles that once invaded the cell and took over. I am interested in how they change their shape and network structure as a response to different stimuli.

I am writing about science in (hopefully) more approachable way and explaining some of the recent discoveries in mitochondrial field. I am linking my “science inspired” drawings to short blog posts about basics in mitochondrial biology and more advanced findings.

I hope you like my visual representation of science and nature as well as writing about biology. I also draw images for special requests so please contact me if you are interested in scientific art fitting to your favourite scientific topic.
